How to edit a task card
Task cards hold the title, description, status, and assignee for each piece of work in your project. You can update any of these details at any time to reflect new information, add progress notes, or change the details of the task. Lots of people edit the card to note where they stored the output (report, image, etc) so other people can find the information.
The process to edit a task card typically takes less than 30 seconds.
Step 1: Open the task card
From the project plan, locate the task card you want to edit. Click anywhere on the card to open its detail panel. The panel will display the task’s current title, description, status label (e.g., TODO), and the name of the assigned team member.
Tip
The panel may briefly show an “Analyzing task dependencies…” loading message before the full content appears. Wait for it to finish loading before proceeding.
Step 2: Enter edit mode
In the upper-right corner of the task card panel, click the pencil icon or the Edit button. The panel will switch into edit mode, replacing the read-only view with editable text fields.
Step 3: Update the task title and/or description
The title field appears at the top of the edit form and is pre-filled with the current task name. Click into the field and make your changes.
Below the title is the Description field, which supports up to 500 characters. The existing description is pre-loaded so you can append notes, add context, or rewrite it entirely. A running character count (e.g., 178/500) displays at the bottom-right of the field.
Tip
Use the description to record progress updates, link to related resources, or add completion notes — for example: “Done – reports saved in SharePoint folder /reports”.
Step 4: Save your changes
Once you are satisfied with your edits, click the Save button in the lower-right corner of the edit form. Your changes will be saved immediately and the task card will return to the read-only detail view, reflecting your updates. All collaborators will see the updated version when they open the card.
To discard your changes without saving, click Cancel instead.
FAQs
The assignee is displayed on the task card detail panel under the Assigned To section, and it can be changed directly from the card if you are the Project Owner. The list of people available for reassignment of the task will match the list of collaborators for that project. If you wish to assign the task to someone not listed, invite that person to collaborate on your project. The task card will update to include their name.
Yes. Task cards in any column — TODO, IN PROGRESS, or DONE — can be edited at any time. Simply click the card to open the detail panel, then click the Edit button to make your changes. This is useful for adding completion notes or correcting details after the work is finished.
Yes. The description field supports a maximum of 500 characters. A live character counter is displayed at the bottom-right of the field as you type (for example, 178/500). If you reach the limit, you will need to shorten your text before saving.
Clicking Cancel exits edit mode and discards any unsaved changes. The task card will return to the read-only detail view with the original content unchanged. No data is lost from the saved version of the card.
Editing a task card updates its title or description while keeping the card — and all its history — intact on the board. Deleting a task card permanently removes it from the project and cannot be undone. Only use Delete Task if you are certain the task is no longer needed.
Yes. Changes are saved to the project in real time. Once you click Save, any other team member viewing the project board will see the updated task card title and description right away. If they do not see the update, ask them to refresh.
